There is a sort of late-life loss nobody quite knows where to file.
Not bereavement. Not a falling out. Not betrayal. Just the moment a friendship built around shared working life quietly loses the ground beneath it.
The original essay looks at one of those friendships: the professional friend who understood every grievance before it was even fully named. The person who knew the process, the people, the meeting, the absurdity. The person whose agreement felt like recognition.
Then retirement arrived and removed the shared problem.
That is when the truth became less tidy. Some friendships are attached to the person. Some are attached to the role. Some are attached to the weather system both people have been standing in for years.
When the weather clears, you find out what is still there.

It is about friendship, ageing, retirement, work, and the odd little grief of realising that some relationships were held together by the very thing you were relieved to leave behind.
